“Every day, think as
you wake up:
Today I am fortunate
to be alive.
I have a precious
human life.
I am not going to
waste it.
I am going to use all
my energies to develop myself;
to expand my heart out to others;
to achieve enlightenment for the benefit of all beings.
I am going to have kind thoughts towards others.
I am not going to get angry or think badly about others.
I am going to benefit others as much as I can.” ~ Dalai Lama ~
Life
is impermanent. When others need help, do not hesitate, do not waste
your time; just help! ~ Dalai Lama ~
The
problem is not materialism as such. Rather, it is the underlying assumption
that full satisfaction can arise from gratifying the senses alone. Unlike
animals whose quest for happiness is restricted to survival and to the
immediate gratification of sensory desires, we human beings have the capacity
to experience happiness at a deeper level which, when achieved, can overwhelm
unhappy experiences.

The
challenge today is to convince people of the value of truth, honesty, compassion and a concern for
others. ~ Dalai Lama ~
“If
we think only of ourselves, forget about other people, then our minds occupy
very small area. Inside that small area, even tiny problem appears very big.
But the moment you develop a sense of concern for others, you realize that,
just like ourselves, they also want happiness; they also want satisfaction.
When you have this sense of concern, your mind automatically widens. At this
point, your own problems, even big problems, will not be so significant. The
result? Big increase in peace of mind. So, if you think only of yourself, only
your own happiness, the result is actually less happiness. You get more
anxiety, more fear.”

Where
ignorance is our master,
there is no possibility of real peace. ~ Dalai Lama ~
there is no possibility of real peace. ~ Dalai Lama ~
We must recognize that
the suffering of one person or one nation is the suffering of
humanity. That the happiness of one person or nation is the happiness
of humanity. ~ Dalai lama ~
“Hard
times build determination and inner strength. Through them we can also come to
appreciate the uselessness of anger. Instead of getting angry nurture a deep
caring and respect for troublemakers because by creating such trying
circumstances they provide us with invaluable opportunities to practice
tolerance and patience.” ~ Dalai Lama ~
Love,
compassion and concern for others are real sources of happiness. If you have
these in abundance, you will not be disturbed even by the most uncomfortable
circumstances. If you nurse hatred, however, you will not be happy even in the
lap of luxury. Thus, if we really want happiness, we must widen the sphere of
love. This is both religious thinking and basic common sense. 14th Dalai Lama
“People
take different roads seeking fulfillment and happiness. Just because they’re
not on your road doesn’t mean they’ve gotten lost.” ~ Dalai Lama ~
As
far as your personal requirements are concerned, the ideal is to have fewer
involvements, fewer obligations and fewer affairs, business or whatever.
However, so far as the interest of the larger community is concerned, you
must have as many involvements as possible and as many activities as possible. 14th Dalai Lama
Every
single being, even those who are hostile to us, is just as afraid
of suffering as we are, and seeks happiness in the same way we
do. Every person has the same right as we do to be happy and not
to suffer. So let's take care of others wholeheartedly, of
both our friends and our enemies. This is the basis for true
compassion. ~ Dalai Lama ~
Like
anyone else, I too have the potential for violence; I too have anger in me.
However, I try to recall that anger is a destructive emotion. I remind myself
that scientists now say that anger is bad for our health; it eats into our
immune system. So, anger destroys our peace of mind and our physical health. We
shouldn't welcome it or think of it as natural or as a friend. - H.H. Dalai Lama XIV
